Roulette

Roulette has been around for a very long time. It is a game that you see in every casino. The house edge for this game is between 2.7% and 5.26%, depending if there is a single zero (2.7%) or a double zero (5.26%). It seems relatively simple, just place your bet on a number and if the ball lands in the "pocket" with your number you win.

You can bet on one, two, three, four, five, six, twelve, or eighteen numbers at once. The more numbers that are covered by one bet, the lower the payout.

Let's cover the the even-money bets first. There are three: red or black, odd or even, and 1-18 or 19-36. To make those bets, all you have to do is place your chip in the appropriate area.

There are also three bets that pay 2 to 1: 1st Dozen (1-12), 2nd Dozen (13-24), and 3rd Dozen (25-35). To make this bet, you place your chip in the appropriate dozen area you wish to bet.

A six-number bet pays 5 to 1. This bet is also called a "line" bet because you place the chip on the line. You have to place your chip on the corner of the line that separates the six number numbers you wish to bet on and the dozens area.

You will be paid 8 to 1 for a four-number bet. Also known as a "corner" or "square" bet. All you have to do is place your chip on the intersection of the four numbers you wish to bet on.

A "street" bet or a three-number bet has an 11 to 1 payoff. To make this bet, place your chip on the line where the row and dozen areas meet. You can make another three-number bet that covers the 0, 00, and 2. To make this bet, place your chip in the middle of the line above the 2 so half of the chip is in the 0/00 area.

If you want to bet on just 2 numbers, also called a "split" bet, then you place your chip on the border between any two numbers. This bet paysoff 17 to 1.

If luck is on your side and you want the biggest payoff, go for the one-number "straight" bet. To make this bet, place your chip in the center of any number. If someone has their chip on the number you want, just place your chip right on top of the other chips. This is why there are different color chips so they know who made which bet. This bet paysoff 35 to 1.

Helpful Tips:

  1. If you forget what is the payout for any particular bet there is a quick way to figure it out besides asking the dealer. Just divide the number or numbers covered by your bet into 36 and then minus 1. For instance, if you're making a a four-number or corner bet, then divide 4 into 36 to get 9. 9 minus 1 equals 8. The payoff for a four-number bet is 8 to 1.
  2. Chips are normally assumed to be $1 value unless you specify another value.
  3. Never lean over the wheel.
  4. Pay attention to when the dealer says "no more bets."
  5. Don't grab your winnings until the dealer removes the marker (usually a clear chess looking piece)
